Here is the hot set up in dual engine Blackhawks from December of 1960. Get that CG low, but put a tall gear on it for acceleration! |
Who says go karting isn't a spectator sport? 1965 Nationals spectators. |
Picture of Ken Burden, the 1965 Grand National Champion with his long time crew chief Bob Jeffrey. Were those some cool trophies or what? |
This is yours truly (Marshall Fairman) getting my first race start on a Mc9 powered kart. Wow, much faster than the Mc6 I'd had before that. My memory is that I won that race day, but then my memory isn't very good. Look, no gloves, neck collar, rib vest or bumpers! We were dare devils back in the day. |

Here is our 'Community Organizer' for our vintage event in Brodhead each year, Bill McCornack. Bill loads up for practice at Brodhead aboard his pristine Bug Stinger. |

C-Open grid in 65. Some drama played out as Ken Burden the pole sitter lost the clutch key on start up. He got it fixed before the green flag and the pace lap was stopped. A class vote gave his pole start back to him. Now that's sportsmanship!

Late 1950's Blackhawk Kart. Don Fairman was building these before Sugar River Raceway was built.
Somebody on their 1960 vintage hot rod on the way to the track. I see a 1956 and a 1960 go kart hauler in the back ground.
This must be some of the very first laps at Sugar River Raceway. The 180 degree left hander is 'Elbow Bend' Did you know that all the corners at Sugar River Raceway were named by Mr. Lee Wolf the builder and founder of the Dousman, WI track?

How about a peek inside the 'Blackhawk Factory'? Here it is with the Blackhawk creator Don Fairman in the foreground. This is likely 1959-1960 time frame.
Remember when flagmen had to be brave and able to jump real high?
Here is standard fare for getting the front end to go where you want it to with the back end. Better known as a 4 wheel drift. A lost art in today's go karting. But then give today's go karters the tires of the 60's and they'd figure out drifting in a hurry.
Some more 1965 Nationals action. Dart karts and GEM mufflers look to be in style.

Picture from 1965 IKF Nationals at Sugar River Raceway. This is Larry McKnight from Rochester, NY on his Caretta B-Limited kart. His home track was the East Avon, NY track which was a copy of the Brodhead layout.
Here are all the 'Built at Sugar River Raceway' Blackhawk karts that returned home for the vintage race. Six that ran and the dual that wasn't quite finished by your's truly.
Here is the start of one of the heats for the rear engine dual class. A pair of 820 karts, a Fox kart with a pair of Mc 101's, a Fox with a pair of Mc91's, and a Kates kart with a pair of Mc 10's!

The front view of the dual Kates kart with the Mc 10's. Notice those front brakes?

With their backs to the camera are, on left driver Scott Sellergren, and on right owner Dave Romaine. And in the center the star of this picture is the beautiful Margay Concept dual with twin 101AA's. Oh, and this kart set the fastest lap of the entire vintage weekend also!
